An easy trail that is well maintained. A "shortcut" between Monument
on I-25 and Woodland Park.
I traveled this from
Woodland Park to Monument as part of a loop starting with the south part of Rampart Range Road. The sign
posts on the Woodland Park side said that it was 12 miles to Monument.
That seemed about right. Traveled in mid-March 2000 the Woodland Park
side of things was still snow covered because of the tree-cover. We
traveled in the ruts that other souls had plowed on through ahead of us.
At one point we tried to travel out of the ruts only to be shoved back
in by gravity.
Once we were past half way to Monument the snow cleared up a lot and
there were no problems. The views of the large rocks that I can only
assume Monument was named for were nice. Towards the Monument side there
are some nice overlooks.
Take I-25 to Monument (exit 161) and head west on 3rd street. Follow
3rd until it runs into 2nd. Turn right on 2nd and cross the railroad
tracks to Mitchell Avenue and turn left. Go about 0.5 miles and turn
right on Mt. Herman Road. Follow Mt. Herman road until it forks and bear
left. This is the trail and is marked as F.S. Road 320.
