Rollins Pass is an easy road that used to go from Rollinsville over
the divide to Winter Park. The top of the trail is closed due to a
rock slide so the two halves need to be driven separately. The trail
is easy and the views are fantastic.
Rollins Pass used to head over the top from Winter Park to Rollinsville
(go figure). A slide has since closed the top of the pass but you can
still drive either side of it. The east side heads out from Rollinsville
(which is just south of Nederland) and heads west-ish for about 18 miles
until it tops out near the top of the pass. The other half, Rollins
Pass East should be driven from Winter Park.
There are some beautiful views along the way including the Moffat
Tunnel, some old towns/buildings, and, of course, Colorado’s scenery.
The road itself is very easy to drive with the major annoyance being lots
of washboards. There is one trail, Jenny Creek Trail
which parallels the road that is very difficult. Only capable drivers in
good vehicles should attempt this.
For some fun, try taking the old mining roads south from FR 16 to BlackHawk.
Be forewarned: it is very easy to get lost on these trails so a good map,
GPS, and a cool head are HIGHLY recommended.
Get to Rollinsville (Take119 south from Nederland or north from Blackhawk)
From Rollinsville, take Forest Service Road 16 west and follow the signs
for Moffatt Tulas & Gazeteer pg: 39, 5-A
