So you're setting out to do a Fourteener or a day hike in the mountains during the summer months.
Do you have all the gear you'll need. Here is a list of items that should be in your
backpack or on your person. This is a list of basic items for easy to moderate day hikes.
Difficult and Extreme hikes may require additional or specialized gear not listed below.
- Sunglasses
- Sunscreen
- Boots, sturdy and water-proof
- Jacket, water-proof
- Pants, water-proof (shell)
- Fleece shirt or jacket
- Compass and Topographic Map
- 2 - 4 liters of water or energy drink
- Food and energy bars
- First aide kit (with Advil or Aspirin)
- Pocket knife
- Toilet Paper and/or napkins
- Camera
- Lighter
- Gloves
- Hat
- Altimeter (not extremely necessary but fun)
- Cell phone
I've also found that after hiking a 14'er it's nice to have the following items stashed in the car.
- Chocolate chip cookies or Pepperidge Farm Milanos (deee-lish)!
- Clean, dry shirt
- Tevas or dry socks and comfy shoes
- more Advil
- Cold water
